Trivia

Trivia turns your server's knowledge into a way to earn. You write the questions; members answer them from the casino, against a timer, and a right answer pays the server currency. There is no bet: trivia is not gambling, so it works even while the casino is off.

Trivia lives on the Economy page, Trivia tab: the settings, your questions and the joker.

Turning it on

Switch Enable trivia on in the Trivia tab and save. The economy itself must be on (the Settings tab). Members then find a Trivia button on the casino table (/casino menu), or go straight to it with /casino trivia.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Time to answer20 s10 to 30 seconds per question.
Tries per question21 to 4. A wrong answer is marked and the member tries again. A question never gets more tries than its answers minus one, so the last try is never a free win.
Reward after a wrong try50%A right answer on the next try pays this share of the previous try's reward.
Easy / Medium / Hard reward50 / 100 / 200What a right answer on the first try pays.
Rounds per window and Window5 per 60 minutesHow many rounds a member can start within the window.
Jokers per round10 to 3. See the joker.

With the defaults, a hard question pays 200 on the first try and 100 on the second. The tab previews what each try pays as you change the numbers.

Writing questions

Click Add question. A question has:

  • its text, 5 to 300 characters;
  • a difficulty: easy, medium or hard;
  • 2 to 5 answers of up to 100 characters each, one of them marked right (no two answers may be the same);
  • a switch, to keep a question without asking it.

The answers are shuffled for every round, so their order in the editor does not matter. Each question shows how often it was answered right once it was asked: a question everybody gets right is a question to replace.

Two questions of a server cannot have the same text.

Importing and exporting a CSV

Import CSV takes a file (or pasted text) with one question per line, in UTF-8. The first line names the columns:

question,difficulty,correct,wrong1,wrong2,wrong3,wrong4,enabled
What is the capital of Australia?,easy,Canberra,Sydney,Melbourne,Perth,,true
How many bones are in the adult human body?,medium,206,186,226,,,
  • question, difficulty, correct and wrong1 are required; wrong2 to wrong4 and enabled (true or false, true when empty) are optional.
  • Separate the columns with commas, semicolons or tabs, and put a cell in double quotes when it holds one of them.
  • One file holds 500 questions or 256 KB at most.
  • Download a template gives a file in this format.

Check reads the whole file first and names every line that cannot be imported, and why: a missing column, a question that is too short or too long, an unknown difficulty, a wrong number of answers, two answers that are the same, a question repeated in the file or already in your questions, or text that is not UTF-8. Nothing is written until you click Import, and then the valid questions are imported all at once. An import that would go over your plan's limit is refused as a whole.

Export CSV downloads every question in the same format, ready to edit and import again. A cell that a spreadsheet would run as a formula is written with a leading ', which the import takes off again.

Playing

  1. The member opens the casino and clicks Trivia, or runs /casino trivia.
  2. They pick a difficulty. A difficulty is greyed out when they have seen every question of it in the last 7 days.
  3. The question and its answers appear, lettered A to E, with the time left. The member clicks a letter:
    • right: the round pays the reward of that try;
    • wrong: the answer is marked and the member tries again, for the next try's reward, until no try is left;
    • no answer in time: the round ends with nothing paid.
  4. Next question starts another round of the same difficulty.

A member is never asked the same question twice within 7 days. When a difficulty has no question left for them, they are told to try another or come back later: FlaviBot never repeats a question early.

The table is public, so it never shows the right answer. A member who loses a round with their own click (a last wrong try, or a click after the time) gets the right answer in a message only they can see. A round that was lost or ran out of time also shows a Show the answer button: it sends the answer to the player alone, the same way. It is never offered while a round is still running, or for a round they won.

A round counts against the member's rounds as soon as it starts. A refusal (no question left, trivia off) never costs one. Trivia's rounds are its own limit: they never use up casino plays, and casino games never use up rounds.

The economy's minimum account age applies, and so does the wallet's maximum balance: a member who already holds the maximum is told so and paid nothing.

The joker

A joker removes one wrong answer from the round and adds 10 seconds. To offer one, create an item of the kind Trivia joker in the Shop tab (one per server); members buy it like any item, and the round shows a Joker button with how many they own. Jokers per round caps how many one round accepts, and a joker cannot be used when only two answers are left.

A joker is only ever used during a round: it is not usable from the inventory or with /economy item use, and an item cannot be turned into a joker, or a joker into another item, after it is created.

Fair play

  • The answers are drawn in a new order for every round, and the buttons carry a letter, never an answer.
  • Only the member who opened a table can answer on it.
  • Time is judged by when Discord says the member clicked, so a slow connection on FlaviBot's side never costs them the round.
  • Members can still look answers up during the round. A short timer and a large pool of questions make that harder.
